Choose one thing to focus on every day
from Make Time: How to Focus on What Matters Every Day by Jake Knapp, John Zeratsky
How to Apply This
-
Choose the most urgent, joyful, or satisfying activities or projects as your highlight of the day.
For example, your highlight could be to prepare and send a quote to a client, to take your kids to a playground, or to draft 1000 words of the next chapter of your book. The trick is to think about the sense of accomplishment you will get at the end of the day, instead of just following the items on your calendar or to-do list, which may not be rewarding, urgent, or satisfying. -
Choose a highlight that takes 60 to 90 minutes.
Most people need a break after 90 minutes of focused attention. -
Write down your highlight, preferably on a sticky note pad.
The things you write down are more likely to happen. -
Repeat your highlight.
You can repeat a previous highlight for a second chance, to build momentum, to create a habit, or to keep the good times rolling. -
Bundle all your small tasks and get them all done as a single highlight.
For example, your highlight could be to reply to all your emails for the week or to return phone calls. -
Trust your guts.
Trust your guts that the highlight you have chosen is best for the day as long as it's urgent, satisfying, or joyful.
