Cope with fear

Instructions

  1. Face your fear.
Instead of running away from your fear, face it. If you are not in a truly life-threatening situation and you are afraid, remain where you are, breathe deeply, and wait for the fear to fade. Expose yourself to your fear as often as possible until you feel less scared.
  2. Calm anxiety with square breathing.
First, look at something square, like a window, door, or picture frame. Second, keep your eyes on the bottom left corner. As you breathe in, count to four and move your eyes up to the top corner. Third, don't breathe for four seconds while you move your eyes from one corner of the top to the other. Fourth, as you let out your breath, move your eyes from the top corner to the bottom corner and count to four again. Fifth, hold for four seconds as you move back to the bottom left corner to start over.
  3. Reframe anxious thoughts.
Write down your anxious thoughts and the evidence that supports they’re not factual. Find other perspectives on the problem and write them down. Write about how you could look at the situation differently to help you get through it.
  4. Cope with the fear of death.
Pick one of these three ways that you think can help you best cope with the fear of death: believing that heaven exists, accepting death as a respite from pain, or accepting death as an uncontrollable and natural aspect of life.
