Create a counterintuitive narrative that grabs and retains people’s attention
Instructions
-
Use jokes and stories to draw and maintain your audience’s attention
If you’re talking to new hires and you want them to grasp the company’s culture, use relevant jokes and stories to highlight what the company stands for. Tell stories about funny and unorthodox things employees have done to engage customers, improve service or boost sales. -
Start your message by posing a question or mystery to be solved
If presenting scientific or technical information that sounds dull, start your speech by either asking a profound question or posing a mystery to your audience. This will keep them glued to you until you reveal the answer to the question or mystery at the end of your presentation. -
Show your audience just how little they know about a topic
You’re an IT manager who wants more funding toward tech innovation but the board thinks that the company is already spending too much in that area. At the beginning of your presentation, show a chart comparing your company’s IT budget to what rival companies are spending on innovation. Use percentages to show how even smaller startups are outspending you. Once they realize just how little they knew about the issue, they’ll pay attention.
