Figure out whether your exchange is based on a social (friendly help without the need to pay it back) or a market norm (based on money or interest).

Check whether what you’re asking reflects that norm.
Asking a friend to help move a large piece of furniture or a few boxes is fine. But asking them to move a lot of boxes or furniture is not—especially if they’re working with paid movers for the same task. In this case, your friend might feel that he's being used.
