Identify areas of success instead of trying to fix failures

Instructions

  1. Clone the successes in your team instead of obsessing over the failures
Let’s say you have a struggling sales team and you want to turn things around. Instead of overanalyzing the problem or bringing in external experts, look for a few salespeople in the team who are hitting their targets. Follow up with them to see what they are doing differently. Then get them to teach their successful tactics to their struggling colleagues.

  2. Use the Miracle Question to identify specific and vivid signs of progress
You’re a therapist dealing with a client who wants to shake off their drinking problem. Ask them: If a miracle solved your drinking problem tonight, what would you do differently tomorrow morning? Get them to provide a vivid description of what every moment of their day would look like. This will help the client focus on the first small signs of change in their life.

  3. Use the Exception Question to show that it’s possible to solve your problems
Once a client has answered the Miracle Question, ask them: When was the last time you saw a little bit of the miracle, even for just a short time? For example, if the client is an alcoholic, ask them: When was the last time you stayed sober for an hour or two? Your goal is to offer up proof that the client has already solved their problem to some degree.
