Improve your ability to remember things
Instructions
-
Create a “memory palace” in your mind to remember specific items.
Our brains naturally are inclined to remember places we’ve been. In your mind’s eye, recall a specific, familiar place. At each marker – say, room corners or from the front door to the mailbox – place your item(s) and make them be occupied with imagery.
Example: If you forgot your to-do list and want to remember getting cat food easily, imagine yourself opening your mailbox to find a cat inside. -
Make the memories outrageous.
To make your memories stick more, use funny, sexy, crazy, or disgusting imagery to what you’re trying to remember so you’ll have an easier time remembering. -
Test yourself.
To strengthen your retrieval, ask yourself, "What did I just learn?" or "What was her name again?" as soon as you learn something new, such as a new person's name. Consider using "spaced repetition," a method of intentionally recalling a memory right before you feel you forget it.
