Know when and how to speak up and challenge people
Instructions
-
Be as empathetic as possible when confronting people
When challenging someone, do so to help them see their blind spots. See the person from where they are at and expect the best of them. Recognize their humanity even as you challenge them to be better. -
Check your beliefs before you ruffle people’s feathers
Ask yourself: Do I mean what I’m about to say? Is this something I truly believe? Only speak up when you know you’re standing up for your heartfelt beliefs. -
Make sure you can defend your argument
Before you challenge someone, ask yourself whether you can defend your argument in case they push back against you. Can you stand in and justify your arguments? Do you have proof to back up your claims? -
Say it thoughtfully and with love
Can you thoughtfully challenge the person while having good intentions? You may be right in expressing your indignation, but are you speaking in love? If you demean someone or speak in a hateful manner, your message will be lost.
