Learn to handle adversity

Instructions

  1. Focus on the right things.
During a crisis, identify the things you can physically influence and those you cannot. Then spend your energy on fixing the issues you can control and let everything else go.
  2. Understand and embrace the worst-case scenario.
Ask yourself a series of questions that will help you realize the worst-case scenario. For example, ask yourself: Now that this situation has occurred, what should we be concerned about? How will this crisis impact our customers? What’s the worst-case scenario moving forward? Will this be a big deal in a week/month/year? What permanent impact will this have on the organization? This will help you put the situation in perspective and dispel any fears you may have.
  3. Listen to your body signals to enhance your self-awareness.
When you feel yourself getting angry when under pressure, calm yourself by taking deep, slow breaths. This moves you from flight or flight mode into a more relaxed state.
