Instructions

  1. Ask.
Showing an interest in other people’s perspectives is the first step. Start by simply asking what they think about the situation in a non-judgmental way.

  2. Mirror.
Mirroring is all about acknowledging their feelings about the situation. Show them that you understand how they are feeling and it’s alright for them to have this response. This lets them know that they are in a safe environment.

  3. Paraphrase.
Once they have shared their opinions with you, paraphrase them and repeat them back. This demonstrates that you have heard and understood them fully. It also allows them to correct you about areas you may have misunderstood.

  4. Prime.
In cases where people are still holding back, you can prime them. Guess how they might think or feel and present this to them. Usually, this draws more information from them and helps them paint the full picture.

  5. Respond.
Now that you have the full picture, you can respond. Always agree with them on views that you share in building common ground. Build on shared views by mentioning things they have left out. Finally, compare views on areas in which you differ instead of saying that their opinion is wrong. Highlight each viewpoint's differences and pros and cons in a measured way.
