Practice the ‘sacred hour’ of prayer and reflection
Instructions
-
Befriend silence.
Drop by a church when it is empty and quiet, find a quiet corner and comfortable chair at home, or have a TV-free evening once a week to enjoy some silence. -
Set aside one hour a day to pray or reflect.
Give this hour to yourself each day as a gift and make it a habit in your life. -
Use this sacred hour for prayer and reflection. Consider the following as options for this time:
a) Find a quiet place, close your eyes, and have a mental dialogue where you talk about what is on your heart and mind.
Talk about why it bothers you and how and why you feel this way. Then sit in silence and listen – often, the solution will present itself.
b) Find some inspirational reading material that can bring you focus and help you concentrate.
Read slowly, savor the words and think about what they mean to you.
c) Try meditation and stillness in your sacred hour.
Focus on an image that is meaningful to you and let all other thoughts flow out of your mind. Sit up straight but relaxed. Place both feet flat on the ground and rest your hands on your lap. Then sit completely still.
d) Take a long walk in a quiet place or visit a place of your childhood.
Walk slowly, breathe slowly and deeply. Visiting a place of your childhood will bring back powerful and wonderful memories. -
Use a simple mantra you can repeat daily to sustain the effect of the sacred hour.
Find your own phrase, quote, word, or sentence that has the power to bring everything back into perspective. This will help you stay focused on your goal.
