Quickly resolve the symptoms of self-sabotage when they show up

Instructions

  1. Overcome resistance by refocusing your attention on your goal and purpose.
Instead of forcing yourself to work on a new project when feeling resistance, find clarity on what you want to achieve and why it’s important. This can help you identify unconscious beliefs blocking you from moving forward. Let your ‘why” be strong enough to inspire you to overcome the resistance.

  2. Ease yourself in big changes instead of doing too much too soon.
When you’re too happy, you naturally feel threatened because your mind starts to tell you all the bad things that could soon go wrong. To overcome self-sabotage, slowly make positive changes. Making slow adjustments allows you to create a new comfort level in that area of your life. Over time, this level will become your new baseline.

  3. Recognize the pattern of uprooting in your life.
Trace back your life over the last few years. How many places have you lived in? How many companies have you worked for? How many different relationships have you been in? Figure out what is driving you away from every new thing and why you’re uncomfortable getting attached to something. Then clarify what you truly want in the long term, whether it’s your career, relationships, etc. Define what the right job/relationship/home would look like and plan how to thrive in it, not just survive.

  4. Focus on progress rather than perfection.
Instead of worrying about doing something perfectly every time, just focus on making progress. Instead of worrying about writing a bestseller, just write your book. Instead of worrying about people liking your music, just make music. Keep showing up and doing your best as long as you enjoy what you do. If your work isn’t that good, just learn from your mistakes and keep improving over time.

  5. Take action on your goals instead of justifying your complacency.
Focus on doing one productive thing daily instead of merely talking about your intentions. It’s about how many days you hit the gym, not how many days you want to exercise. It’s about acting on the ideas to start your business, not the number of ideas you have.

  6. Keep your space free of clutter to avoid unnecessary distractions.
A messy space provides a good excuse for why you’re not being productive. You can clean your desk or office space. If cleaning a room is too much, just start with one corner of a room or a single drawer and start decluttering progressively. Arrange your space so that it works for you rather than against you.

  7. Set aside your pride and be more honest and realistic with yourself.
Pride can trigger you to make bad decisions that ruin your business, career, or relationships. Release yourself from the need to show everybody how perfect you are and simply acknowledge your weaknesses. Some examples are asking for business advice when you need it and leaving a toxic relationship instead of staying just to avoid public shame. This is how you learn and grow.
