Instructions

  1. Pre-commit to times when you won’t be on your phone.
    A pre-commitment is when you essentially put your phone away somewhere so that you can have dedicated time to focus on one thing. This could be turning your phone off when you get home so you can spend time with your family undistracted. So, how can you pre-commit to giving yourself dedicated times of focus? Write it down.
  2. Find time to get away.
    Go spend time in nature or take a vacation so you can simply take in life as it is without being constantly distracted by your phone. This will allow your mind to reset and have the freedom it needs to support your creativity and overall well-being. Give yourself a digital detox.
  3. Slow down.
    In a world that is constantly accelerating and expecting you to do the same, find ways to slow down. This can be done through practices such as yoga, tai chi, or meditation.
  4. Practice monotasking.
    Start building the monotasking muscle in your brain by committing periods of work to a singular task. You can start with a time period as small as ten minutes. Over time, you will experience a greater ability to focus.
  5. Fix your sleep.
    Do your best to get your eight hours of sleep every night. Allow yourself to relax as you wind down the day. Avoid blue light from screens for at least two hours before bed, and ensure there are no artificial light sources in your bedroom. Keep your bedroom on the colder side.
  6. Read more books.
    Reading books improves attention and helps you develop deeper levels of understanding than you would gain from social media or television. Reading novels is not only enjoyable but also gives you a greater ability to empathize with others.
  7. Allow time for mind wandering.
    Allow time in your day when your mind can be free to wander. Going for a walk, a jog, or a bike ride could be great ways to allow your mind to digest the things going on in your life and world.
