Scatterfocus for creativity

Instructions

  1. Immerse yourself in an environment rich in mental triggers
For example, go to the park and engage in people-watching. You can also walk through your house with a notepad and write down a list of tasks that need to be completed.

  2. Write down the problems you want to solve
If you’re struggling to write a book, write down the outline and review it regularly to keep the project at the top of your mind. Then spend some time in scatterfocus mode and mentally review the outline to come up with creative ideas for the book.

  3. Sleep on the problem
If you’re struggling to solve a problem, review it before you go to bed. The answer will come to you while your mind is at rest during the night.

  4. Purposefully delay making a creative decision
Wait a bit longer before making a creative decision such as how to reply to an important email or how to select among potential recruits. Stepping back from a situation gives your mind time to make more valuable connections.
