Set a good example for your team by being vulnerable

from The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable by Patrick Lencioni

How to Apply This

  1. Share personal stories that showcase your downfalls, mistakes, or losses.
Be vulnerable with your team and let them in.
  2. Refer to your team with words that convey unity.
When referring to your team, use "us" and "we" instead of "you guys" or "you all.” When you use words like "us" and "we,” you further cement your bond with the other team members.
  3. Organize and participate in team-building exercises.
As a part of the team, you should also participate in team-building exercises.
  4. Consider removing anyone on the team who is unwilling or unable to be vulnerable.
Unwilling team members can make the rest of the team feel uncomfortable and revert back to unproductive ways. If someone is unwilling to bond with the team, it may be best to let them go.
