Take measures to select the right financial advisor

Instructions

  1. Check out their credentials to ensure a minimum level of competency.
Vet the professional credentials of a financial advisory company before hiring their services. For example, if you need financial planning services, ensure they have a certified financial planner on their team. If you need tax advice, ensure they have a certified public accountant on staff. If you need legal assistance, check whether they have an estate planning attorney.
  2. Select a financial advisor with a breadth of expertise.
Find an advisor who can show you how to handle a range of financial issues such as portfolio design, taxes, insurance, mortgages, etc. You may only need one service right now, but their varied expertise will come in handy as the years go by.
  3. Choose an advisor who is aligned with your financial philosophy.
Do they believe that they can beat the market by selecting individual stocks? Or do they know that the chances of beating the market are low and are focused on well-diversified index funds? Stay away from any advisor whose philosophy is to try to beat the market.
  4. Find an advisor you can personally relate to.
Though it’s a professional relationship, look for someone you can talk to about your hopes, dreams, and legacy. Find an advisor who you trust and admire so that you can have a long-term financial ally.
