Take out your inner thorns

Instructions

  1. Decide that you don’t want to suffer anymore.
You can decide today that you will enjoy your life and no longer be caught up in all your inner pains and mental melodrama. Commit to changing your entire experience of pain by being willing to let go.
  2. Fire your mind from the job of making sure everything is going to be okay.
Your mind is not qualified or even capable of controlling the external world in a way that will keep you safe from all harm. When your mind starts telling you what you must do to ensure everything will be okay, choose not to play its game. Gently disengage from that thinking—quiet the mind, relax your shoulders, your breath, and your heart, and just sit back and consciously observe the mind.
  3. Set up trigger points throughout the day for check-ins.
Use regular moments like getting in and out of the car, the moment before you answer the phone, or before you enter a door to check in and get a sense of the energy in your mind and heart, whether it is agitated or not. Relax behind the noise, and connect with that place of pure awareness.
  4. Start with the little things.
Use little things that bother you daily, such as if a friend hasn’t texted you back, as opportunities to sit back behind the mind and observe its melodrama. Observe the sensation of turmoil it creates in your chest, and view it simply as energy, detached from your stories. Continue to build this habit through these little moments.
