Train yourself to respond properly to fear
Instructions
-
In this moment, begin to open your attention to the whole of your environment.
Let yourself relax and receive information through your senses: notice what you can see, hear, feel, smell, what’s around you, etc. Be like a sponge, easily and naturally absorbing all your perceptions. Do this for 1-2 minutes. -
Make this relaxed attention practice a part of your routine.
You can do it when you’re out and about, or at home. Try it for 1-10 minutes at a time, starting once a week and working up to every day. -
If and when you do feel truly afraid, honor your fear and listen to it.
Commit to trusting your innate survival skills right now, so that they can serve you when you really need them. You can make a promise to yourself: I will trust and honor my fear to keep me safe and help me survive. Repeat this out loud several times, until it sinks in. -
Limit news-watching.
Designate a news-free day every week (eg. Sunday), or a news-free period every day (eg. early morning, or just before bed). After 1-2 weeks, notice and reflect on how you feel.
