Write a purpose statement

Instructions

  1. Define five core values.
Your core values are a starting point for your overall purposes. Choose five from the following list:
     - Achievement
     - Commitment
     - Community
     - Consistency
     - Courage
     - Creativity
     - Education
     - Efficiency
     - Enjoyment
     - Enthusiasm
     - Expertise
     - Honesty
     - Independence
     - Inspiration
     - Kindness
     - Loyalty
     - Motivation
     - Optimism
     - Positivity
     - Pragmatism
     - Relationships
     - Responsibility
     - Security
     - Self-control
     - Spirituality
     - Tradition
     - Reliability
     - Reputation
     - Vitality

  2. Personalize your core values.
Once you have decided on five core values, write a sentence or two about each one to make them personal to you. For example, if you have chosen ‘reliability,’ you can write down how you will demonstrate it. Is it by completing work projects on time, every time? By ensuring that performance always exceeds expectations? Think about how each core value fits into your life.

  3. Rank your core values in order of importance.
Put the one you hold most deeply at the top of the list.

  4. Write your purpose statement.
Finally, you should write a purpose statement of 2-3 sentences that encapsulates your core values and how they fit into your life. For example, if you chose ‘Achievement,’ ‘Commitment,’ ‘Reputation,’ ‘Motivation,’ and ‘Education,’ you could use the following purpose statement: “Be the best athlete that I can be so that others are inspired to push their own limits.”
